The Path

With signing day upon us, many softball players and families are preparing for one of the biggest days of their softball career. This day marks the culmination of years of commitment, hard work, and sacrifice by players, parents, families, coaches, and organizations. So much planning, effort, sweat, money, and time go into preparing for this—the opportunity to play at the next level. It is a time to celebrate, but also to reflect on what you have given of yourself to this amazing sport and what this sport has hopefully offered you in return.
For some of the few lucky ones, softball may lead to a financial scholarship to offset or cover the cost of a post-high school education.
For others, it provides the opportunity to gain access to an academic institution that may have otherwise been out of reach. All that said, one thing is true for most – playing in college is an opportunity to continue being a part of a game they love.
Ram Dass once said “Don’t compare your path with anybody else’s. Your path is unique to you.” This week, those signing an NLI are making some pretty big decisions. Decisions with serious life altering potential. Some will be celebrating the access to their dream major, or ideal university, or opportunity to compete with the best players in the world. The wonderful thing about softball is that student athletes can select a path that is best for them and their families based upon the circumstances of today, and yet the path can change in the future as they learn more about their own goals and dreams.
So while we whole heartedly celebrate the accomplishment and softball journey of our girls signing a National Letter of Intent this week, we also must celebrate those who are considering other options and opportunities as they asses their future plans. The beauty of this sport is that it has taught everyone to adapt, overcome challenges, and improve through hard work, support of others, and personal growth. Your path is your own and is not tied to or dependent on anyone else’s. So whether your road leads to more softball or not, we should all celebrate the journey.
